Colleen ‘Mrs. Hockey’ Howe (February 17, 1933 – March 6, 2009) was a hockey innovator and sports powerhouse in her own right who opened doors for women of all ages who love the game. She was the first female sports agent ever and founded Power Play International and Power Play Publications to manage the business interests of her husband, Hall of Fame hockey player Gordie Howe and their sons Marty and Mark. As a civic leader, she brought the first Junior A
hockey team to the United States, built the first indoor rink for public use in Michigan and ran for Congress. In 2000, as “Mrs. Hockey”, Colleen received the Wayne Gretzky International Award—presented to individuals “who have made major contributions to the growth and advancement of hockey in the United States”—from the US Hockey Hall of Fame, along with her husband (known as “Mr. Hockey”) and sons. Married to Gordie for 55 years, she truly was the driving
force in the First Family of Hockey. The Mrs. Hockey Invitational Tournament is both a tribute to her legacy and a passing of the torch to females in hockey everywhere.
The Mrs. Hockey® Invite is an invite-only event created for girl teams at the 12U division. With multiple divisions to ensure the most competitive level of play for participants, the event is set for January 17 - 20th, 2020, and played at the state-of-the-art Florida Hospital Center. This important tournament continues Colleen Howe’s legacy and spirit, and passes the torch to the young ladies who will partake in this memorable event.
What will be your LEGACY?
Sports is a life-long passion and The Howe Foundation wants to give everyone the opportunity to experience that passion. The Howe Foundation has two specific goals:
1. Kids First: Helping kids get involved in sports, from their first skates or first soccer ball, to the international competitions, to the best schools whether they make it to the pros or not.
2. Women in the Business of Sports: Helping women rise through the ranks of the sports business through education, experiences and networks. This is Mrs. Hockey’s Legacy.
Because once they experience sports and the business of sports through The Howe Foundation, they’ll carry the lessons throughout their life and pass it on the next generation.
